Return to the Forum Listrepair rusted RL28 keel | My keel on the RL28 is badly corroded with flaking rust along the leading edge and part of the sides, I intend to chip of all the flaking rust and the grind or sand these areas prior to filling and fairing with epxoy fillers.
Any suggestions as to what is the best paint or finishing product for the keel, this keel looks like it was orginaly painted with a black bitumise paint.

| Re: repair rusted RL28 keel | Lloyd.
All cast Iron keels were origonally coated with five coats of "Tar Epoxy" and this was a very tough and durable coating , but unfortunatly this product was banned during the nineties for some obscure reason and to my knowledge has not been available since.

| Re: repair rusted RL28 keel | I used coal tar epoxy on a trailer some years ago, great stuff.
A google search provided a list of suppliers.

| Re: repair rusted RL28 keel | The epoxy tar that Jason recommends is no longer made and I was unable to find any to re-coat my keel. This was used originally in the factory to coat the RL keels and is by far the best stuff to use as it will last more than 20 years. Although Norglass no longer make it, there is a manufacturer in China though I couldn't find a local supplier.
If anyone knows where they can get it, please let us know here.

| Re: repair rusted RL28 keel | The tar epoxy used was made by "Pioneer" and origonally made in Australia , but they have moved to India and will now only reply to trade enquiries. As far as I can find out, this product is still on the banned list in Australia as other manufacturers have also ceased manufacture, although it is still available in USA, and Asian countries.
