Hi , I was wondering if anyone may be able to help me . I am looking at a RL 24 MKIV , sail number 401 ( Sequoia ) . It is fitted with a small bulb keel . My question is this . Were any of the MKIV's fitted with a bulb keel or was this done at a latter date ? I believe this boat was owned and raced by Rob Legg . Any information would be much appreciated .
Hi Brent. There was a relatively short period when some RL owners experimented with bulbs on the keel. My understanding is that they helped a small amount with stability but added nothing to speed. Rob will no doubt answer himself but I'd bet the bulb was added well after Rob sold the boat as I don't believe Rob thought bulbs would be useful, and besides, Rob owned the boat in around 1983 and the bulb "craze" didn't happen until I reckon 1996.
Brent.
I cant argue with James memory, he is right on all three counts, although he forgot to add that the addition of the bulb does infact make launching and retreaveal more difficult and also rules out the the convienence of being able to beach the boat.
Thanks for your help and information . I will factor that in when I look at the boat . I will have a look to see if it is the original keel and if it has the bulb bolted on . It is so small that I doubt it achieves much and would do away with it .
Regards , Brent
