The 2017 RL24 Championships were conducted by the GLYC at Paynesville the first week of January.
14 Boats attended, 8 swing keels and 6 drop keels who all enjoyed some fantastic sailing conditions and friendly competition.
All in all Paynesville’s weather for the week was outstanding, very warm with sea breezes.
Socially there was something on most nights at the club and the fleet helped the bar flourish most evenings. Tuesday was GLYC’s twilight race which a number of RL’s took the opportunity to take part in. We all had a great week sailing and catching up with the regulars and the many new comers to the class.
11 boats headed out on Monday for 3 short invitation races in about 12-15 Knots with the last race up to around 20 Knots. A great shake down for the next 7 heats.
“Ohau Rua” skippered by Simon Walsh won all 3 races in the drop keels with “Cosmicsedso” Paul Corben and “The Sting” Lloyd Graham close on his heels. In the swing keel division, “Whatever” skippered by Darryn Dyer won all 3 races followed b y “Hurricane Jack” skippered by Scott Voller and “Spiral Navigator” Wayne Hill.
Tuesday saw all 14 boat head out to the start for heats 1 & 2. All boats completed both races in around 10 – 14 knot of south easterly breeze. “Cosmicsedso” won the first race in the drop keels after Ohau Rua mucked up the course flags and rounded the gate when they should have gone to the finish. This allowed “Lowana V” Skippered by Simon Vaughan into second and “Dodgy Vindaloo” Skippered by Tim Jackman into third. Well was Paul Corben crowing about beating “Ohau Rua”.
The second race “Ohau Rua” reigned supreme with the Dodgy brothers (Dodgy Vindaloo) 2nd and “Lowana V” 3rd
In the swing keels the race was on between “Whatever” and the Colac boys on “This Way Up” with “Whatever” winning the first heat and “This Way Up” skippered by Ian Lane winning the second. “Hurricane Jack” was 3rd in the first and “Spiral Navigator” 3rd in the second race.
Wednesday saw more wind with the pressure around 17-22 with one or two gusts at 25Knots.
There were 6 boats that didn’t complete these races due to the extra wind and the Dodgy Brothers laid her flat twice, once in each race.
Drop Keel results saw “Ohau Rua” and “Cosmicsedso” taking out first and second in both heats with Lowana V taking 3rd in the 3rd heat and “The Sting” 3rd in heat 4.
Swing keel results saw “Whatever” winning heat 3 and “This Way Up” skippered by Ian Lane winning heat 4. “Hurricane Jack” Scott Voller was 3rd in both.
Thursday saw similar conditions to Tuesday with all boats racing.
In the drop keels heat 5 & 6 was again won by “Ohau Rua”. In heat 5 “Dodgy Vindaloo” was 2nd and “Lowana VI” 3rd. In Heat 6 “Lowana VI” was 2nd Skippered by Michael Shannon and “Lowana V” 3rd.
The swing keel’s saw “Whatever winning both heats, “This Way Up” 2nd in both and “Hurricane Jack” with 2 thirds.
Friday’s heat 7 was the lightest wind at around 8-10knots.
Drop Keels 1st “Ohau Rua” 2nd “Lowana V” and 3rd “Lowana VI”
Swing Keels 1st “Whatever” 2nd “This Way Up” and 3rd “Hurricane Jack”

Drop Keels: 1st “Ohau Rua” Simon Walsh, 2nd “Lowana V” Simon Vaughan and 3rd “Cosmicsedso” Paul Corben.
Swing Keels: 1st “Whatever” Darryn Dyer, 2nd “This Way Up” Ian Lane and 3rd “Hurricane Jack” Scott Voller.
