Darryn organised a wonderful afternoon at RQYS for the start of the 2019 Nationals with a sail-past attended by Rob Legg who has just celebrated his 90th birthday. The boats looked fantastic - better than new despite their age.
Some pictures are available in the Gallery.
Indeed a very fine day...have never seen so many RL 24's...and was very impressed by these superb small yachts...each one was slighly different...very interesting...only saw one RL 28...the owners told me that it was the last one built...1989...at least one RL 34 and I spoke to an older fellow....probably in his seventies who owned one....told me it was a superb yacht...had taken him up to the Whitsundays...shook the legendary Rob Legg by the hand...and it was great to witness the sail by...with Mr Legg sitting on the pontoon...and the crews of the different yachts going past saluting him...congratulations to the organizers...and congratulations to Rob Legg on his 90th birthday...and for being the designer of such fine yachts.
Thank you all that attended the sail past on Sunday 6th Janurary at RQYS, I had a wonderful day, and it was great to meet up again with the old RL24 sailors from the past as well as the current owners and crews.
I must apologise to all those whom I would have liked to spend more time with, but time ran out.
It was amazing the way so many boats looked to be in new condition when I could tell by the sail numbers that some were in fact over forty years old, the owners must truly love their boats to take such care.
Thank you to all members of the RL24 association for having organised such a successful day.
