Hobie 16 mast on RL24?
Hi all. Quite some time back i read that a hobie 16 masr can be used on an RL24. I have an opportunity to purchase a used one in good condition and am wondering if there are 1) tips or recommendations 2) rigging diagrams. I am based in central Canada so access to parts is somewhat restricted.
Cheers
Ric

Re: Hobie 16 mast on RL24?
My U.S. "cruising spec" RL24 mast is only 26' 1" long. I think the competitive ones in AUS are a little over 27'. A Hobie 16 would need spreaders added if I'm not mistaken. Does your RL have an extra set of chainplates on the sides of the cabin top?

I dont have chain plates but there are four ubolts. Two on the cabin roof and two on the side decks. Both are set back about 12-18 inches (guessing here) from the rear line of the mast. The photos I have seen of RL24s with this rig dont seem to have either spreaders or rear stays but I cannot rely on the photos.

Re: Hobie 16 mast on RL24?
Are you referring to a rotating mast like on a Hobie? Or shrouds leading way back like the Australian RL's? If it is the latter check the RL24 Facebook page and you'll notice in those pictures that all the boats have swept back spreaders. The spreaders on my boat are swept back 15 degrees. Anyway there is a diagram on this site under drawings on the rl24 page. Also the skiff rig and setup page has more measurements. PM me I can make a drawing of the US "cruiser" mast.

Re: Hobie 16 mast on RL24?
Hi all. Finally I have located a Hobie 16 mast however I have absolutely no idea on how it should be rigged for an RL24. I see on the forum that many in OZ have done this. I am in Canada and really would appreciate advice on stay locations, spreaders (and part numbers) masthead fitting and back stay if necessary, also can the old mainsail be used. I currently have a yet to be configured Aquarius 23 mast which is really heavy so if I can do something with a Hobie mast it would sure help.
